Circular no: 12/5/AF/2
Brussels 30 January 2012
Dear Colleagues,
Ref: ETF President
At the ETF Executive Committee meeting held on 9 and 10 November 2011, the ETF President,
Graham Stevenson, announced that he was likely to retire from his union at the end of that
month. This has been confirmed in a message to the ETF General Secretary on the 30th of
November.
According to the ETF Constitution, “If the office of President… falls vacant between
Congresses, the Executive Committee shall appoint a successor.” (Rule 6, paragraph 8)
The Executive Committee thanked Graham Stevenson for having long served the ETF in
different capacities and also agreed on the following conclusions:
- The appointment of a new President should take place as quickly as possible whilst
ensuring a transparent process for all affiliates.
- A consensus should be found for a single nomination for ETF President to avoid a
contested election
- In appointing the new President, the Executive Committee will take into consideration
that the appointed candidate should also be ready to be elected for a full mandate at the
forthcoming Congress in 2013.
Until such appointment takes place, the ETF Vice-Presidents, Brigitta Paas and Alexander
Kirchner shall ensure the coordination of the ETF political work with the Secretariat.
It is thus proposed that any possible candidates submit their nominations, with a motivation
letter and brief CV accompanied by any possible list of supportive organisations, to the ETF
General Secretary at e.chagas@etf-europe.org by the 29th of February 2012 at the latest.
At its extraordinary meeting scheduled for the 14th of March the Executive Committee will
assess the candidatures received and should there be a consensus on a single name, the
appointment will take place on that same meeting. Otherwise, a selection process will be run so
that a decision can be taken at the following EC meeting, scheduled to take place on 31 May
and 1 June of 2012.
The Secretariat is already aware of some possible candidatures and will be ready to provide
further additional information that you may need.
With friendly regards
Eduardo Chagas
ETF General Secretary
